About Us

The Persatuan Psoriasis Malaysia (Psoriasis Association Of Malaysia) is a registered, non-profit, self-help, lay organisation of psoriasis sufferers started in 1987 to help improve the life of people with psoriasis and their families. It is funded by public donations, membership dues and grants from friends in the pharmaceutical industry and is served by a few Medical Advisors who are practicing dermatologist from the Dermatological Society of Malaysia.

Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune mediated disease which symptoms are seen visibly on the skin. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious.

Individuals with psoriasis are at an elevated risk to develop other chronic and serious health conditions also known as “comorbidities.” It is estimated that up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis. People with psoriatic diseases also are at greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease and depression.

125 million people worldwide—2 to 3 percent of the total population—have psoriasis, according to the World Psoriasis Day consortium. Studies show that between 10 and 30 percent of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis. (Source: http://www.psoriasis.org/learn_statistics)

Given that the population of Malaysia is 28,250,400 (Source: Population, Household and Living Quarters (2010), Department of Statistics, Malaysia.) – it is estimated that 500,000 to 800,000 Malaysians are afflicted with Psoriasis.

The association is managed by volunteers. Should you have be a psoriasis patient or caregiver with time or talent to offer, please contact us.

Should you be visiting Kuala Lumpur – please see the names of the doctors we have posted on this blog. Personally, my derm is Doctor Koh as listed and he has been my dermatologist for many years. All the best 🙂

  3. my hubby’s friend is suffering from psoriasis and conditions are getting worse.. As finances are not very comfortable, we would like to see this friend recover well.. He has been visiting our Gourvernment hospitas but conditions still worsen.. Can u pls recomend a ‘resonably priced’ dr or medication for this condition.. It breaks my heart to see a friend suffer.. BTW we live in subang jaya and our friend in PJ. Thanks

    • psoriasismalaysia

      Hi Donna,

Thanks for your email. Psoriasis can be heart breaking and many of the members of the Psoriasis Association understands how it feels to have this condition. Without knowing the condition of your friends – first is it localised psoriasis (1 or 2 spots) or systemic (all over the body). If it is systemic – the first thing to do is to see a professional dermatologist who deals with psoriasis patients. Best to seek out the dermatologist which are very familiar with treating psoriasis. Here are some doctors that we have experience with (see link below). I am Dr Koh’s patient and he is familiar with psoriasis and has the expertise to treat and advise. From my experience with Dr Koh – a patient can also discuss his/her condition and the options to manage the condition given the available budget. His clinic is in PJ (Dsara Uptown) and he also consults at University Hospital PJ, on Fridays.

    • hi,
my dad has psoriasis for 20 years and is erythrodermic psoriasis, (which means whole body is covered)]
he used to take methotrexate (MTX) but it only work for a while. if you stop taking it, it flare again

so he stop all western medication and turn to herbal med.
and he drinks alot of water. at the moment he’s drinking MRET water. you can get it from KL and JB
by far this is the best he has ever been without the use of western medication .

alot of rest and emotionally stress free is very important.
he avoid peanuts and most beans. (too high in protein is not good for him)

all i can say is every body is different.
some of his friends use simple remedy

      1. udo’s oil ( http://oilthemachine.com/) and it works for them.
      nothing but udo’s oil.
      2. olive oil or olive leaf extracts.

my dad did tried all this but it didn’t seem to work as well as just water and olive oil extracts.

he doesn’t flare up so much now and is on the journey to recovery.

i have psoriasis too, but is very mild.
i’m 30 years old and when i was 12 i had it all over my forehead and elbow during exams period.

when exam finish, it will slowly go away.

at age 20, when i was in Uni, i’ll get it during exams and assigment period.
so i started exercising alot, going to the gym and swimming.,

i believe it was because i was young and am very careful of my diet (since my dad has it for such a long time)

i manage to control take it under control.

hope in the information will find you some relief.
      there is hope !!

  14. Hi, i have been living with psoriasis since i was 17 years old and now i am 40. I have tried a lot of medicine and it would the seem the only ones i can use is very expensive. My question is, are we entitled for tax deduction for serious illness?

    • psoriasismalaysia

Hi Syed. Thanks for your comment. Psoriasis is currently does not fall into the category of diseases where medical expenses is tax deductible. Having said that, the Psoriasis association is working with the international federation of psoriasis association and the world health organisation to get psoriasis classified as a serious and chronic diseases. Once this is confirmed, we can approach the health ministry on this. This will take some time and we hope it will happen sooner than later.

  16. Hi, i have had psoriasis since I was 5yrs old and I am 33 this yr. My psoriasis are solely on the arms and legs. 2 yrs ago, I totally ditched my steroid cream and followed a regimen from this book called healing psoriasis by dr A Pagano. It works wonder for me and I was totally cleared of psoriasis for 2 yrs until I started drinking alcohol, not watching my diet, over stressed myself and etc. And now, plus the heat and haze, it has all came back again.

Basically, this book explains that, for psoriasis patients to rid psoriasis, we must clean our internal organs of any toxins. When our body has too much toxins and not being eliminated properly, ie liver and kidney not function properly, the toxin will then try to be eliminated through our skin. But, before it cld be eliminated, out t cell will start to attack our skin. Basically, in order to get rid of psoriasis, we’ll need to keep our colon off toxin and make sure our liver n kidney is in good shape.

Just want to share this piece of info and hope it might help. maybe you guys can also do some research on detoxification and psoriasis online for more info. I will be starting my cleansing of colon and the regimen again and will update on the progress.

    Cheers
    Elle

  19. Hi,

I just found out i have scalp psoriasis 2 years ago. All this while i thought it was just heavy dandruff until i realize the flakes are like hard pieces of plastic. Went to my panel clinic. The doctor said I’ll have it for the rest of my life, no cure just treatments and prevention to make it bearable. I’ve been using tar shampoos with topical meds like aquous, Xamiol, elomet, and few other names I can’t remember, I can bare with the scalp as it comes and go depending on my diet and stress level.

But these past few months I have other problems. My hand joint and feet hurt, the sole, the fingers…whole foot. The doctor said I have plantar fasciitis and joint pain caused by psoriasis. Fine! Then last month foot started itching. First only few small hard bumps like mosquito bites around the feet then my hand started to get very dry and flaky too. Now both foot are itchy with bumps everywhere and I cannot stand the itch. The prescribe medicine does not work. My psoriasis is getting worst because I’m stress up because of this things i’m having. I used to managed my stress quite well but now i just cant bear it. I’m overweight but I used to play badminton every week until the psoriasis betray me.

I’m looking for better solution, better doctor…I live in cheras so can anybody advice me on which normal clinic provide good psoriasis treatment (mind that I can’t afford high $$ specialist-that’s why i stick to panel until now).

    Thank you.

  24. Hi,im 22 years old.i having psoriasis over 4 year ago.from first I have scalp psoriasis then a few year later it spread to my body like red patches also my knee and elbow.please give me advice about food or effective solution

    • Hi Dicky , thanks for your message.
. My name is Dom and I’m the secretary of the association. Could we first check if you are seeing a dermatologist? This is the most important step to take.

With regards to diet, there are a few ways to approach this. One of the widely acceptable concepts is that when one has an allergy (due to something you have eaten), you may scratch (even unconsciously while sleeping) and the Koebner Phenomenon (trauma to the skin surface) will cause the psoriasis to appear.
Hence if you have a diet that allows you to avoid allergic substances, you may be able to have less psoriasis lesions. Also take note that in order to detect if you are allergic to anything – this comes through trial and observation.
The dermatologist that we have consulted have mentioned that allergy test do not bring up accurate results. Having said that – please do consult your doctor for further information.

There are other diets practiced by psoriasis patients such as the gluten free diet and the “Pagano Diet” (search Amazon.com) for more information.

Nevertheless a good diet that is low in transfat, rich in macro and micro nutrients will be good for patients of any illness. Something that is difficult to practice in Malaysia due to our tasty food heritage.

You may try out the different diets available although we would advocate safety and wisdom in choosing the diet. Example consulting with a doctor about the diet (even if the doctor doesn’t believe in the diet – it is up to you to try as long as it is safe). If you think the diet is safe – then by all means, please do try and let us know how you are doing. We hope the above information has been helpful.

Please check our website and under the post by Dr Bagel – do checkout his tips about diet and how it may affect your psoriasis. We hope the info we have given helps. Do signup with our Facebook to connect with the other psoriasis patients.

  25. Hi , i’m 20 y/o .. I’ve got a scalp psoriasis since i was in form4 and the dermatologist said it was a mild psoriasis but no cure and so they gave me some medicines including polytar shampoo , cetrimide 1% lotion , 2% of salicyclate acid cream , 1% of hydrocortisone and betamethasone 17-valerate cream 1:4 . At first it’s work on me and the scalp is reduced so then i stopped but i’ll apply it when the scalp appear is gettin itch and worse again. I hate to apply the cream because it make me feel uncomfortable so i just depends on the shampoo ,rarely apply the cream but never tell the dermatologist the way i applied my medicines because i thought it wasn’t serious . but after a year it spread to my back of ear ,in my ear and sometimes it spotted somewhere on my skin. Then , i saw some white spot at my private part which make me wonder ..would psoriasis will be spotted at that area too?? Should i apply the medicine given at the area?? Is psoriasis make my private part become itch? Please help me ..i really worry if my psoriasis start to begin at this area 😦

  26. Hai I’m here to share my story and concerns.. I’ve been having psoriasis since I was a child (around the age of 10 to 12) and now I’m 25y/o. I did went to the doctors (GOV hosp) since the first outbreak (it was all over my scalps and they forming like another layer on my scalp..it’s embarrassing, itchy and the sweat collection in between the layers causing it to smell a bit), but I defaulted from my treatments a few times due to various reasons. In 2012 they flare up once again on my forehead, so I decided to see the doctors, but then I defaulted once again since they seem to get better and I was bored of the needs to do a followup when I know the treatment was only symptomatic. But now I had it again and it bother me whenever I looked at the mirror having to face up the red spots on my forehead that is itchy and scaly and the facts that I have to go out (to works and sort) in such condition (sometime makes me want to hide it in someways). Now that I already defaulted for 2y from the treatment, I had no longer have the medication that I used to have from the hospital. I wished not to do the followups since I don’t get the point of doing so apart from waiting for the prescription slip and straight away to the pharmacy for the medications. But I don’t know what the name of the cream that I used before, or else I could already bought it in the pharmacy myself (if anyone knows it please tell me).

The thing is through out the years of having this disease whats really hit me is that doctors used to say to me that I should know that there’s no cure for this disease and the treatment was only to reduce the symptoms. I understands that it’s an autoimmune disease and it’s hardly had any cure for those kind of diseases (just like rhinitis that I had too). But in term of reassurance part to comfort me as a patient, from the stress of having the disease and the tiring hours of waiting in every followup that I went, being told that I could never be cure might have get me a little depressed over this whole ordeal. Sincerely me from KL.

  27. hi. Im 25 this year and i had it since 5 years old. my condition starting from the scalp, then to my scrotum and manage to move it to a more manageable spot which is the left leg. However, i realised that every time i accidentally scratched it, my urine schedule is disrupted. I had to pee every 15-30minutes. If not, the urge to pee but nothing comes out. It has affect my work life as i cant be going to the toilet that often and this leads to stress over unfinished work. I would like to note that these little things affect one another and lead to STRESS. Again, my condition recently has also worsen when I cant control my emotions and short of breath. My parents are negligent about this so i only have myself to care for.
Just wanted to share that our mental and emotional health may be the best solution to psoriasis. Lets stay positive and do our best to get rid of all the negativity that can affect our mental and emotional health. cheers
